Physical Education deserves a higher standard

I’m Dexter Pendergraft — a veteran educator, former building-level administrator/elementary PE district coordinator, and current 3-5 PE teacher. I’m here to help you trade daily gym chaos for structured, standards-driven success.

I spent 4 years in pre-K, 4 years in K-5 physical education, and 4 years in building-level administration and district-wide PE coordination. Across those 12 years, I saw every side of the system—from managing 60+ kids in a gym with 45 minutes on the clock to writing district curriculum and evaluating teachers.

I know how exhausting it is to deal with massive class sizes, behavior management headaches, and time constraints. But more than anything, I know the frustration of fighting for your subject to be taken seriously.

The moment things changed

The defining moment for me came when I hit the harsh reality of the PE stigma.

I hated being lumped into the generic perception of physical education, because I knew I wasn't just letting kids run around—I was actually teaching. But I also had to admit a hard truth: the stigma exists for a reason.

Too many teachers don't know how to structure their time, don't have the tools to manage large numbers, or have simply surrendered to rolling out the ball and calling it a day.

I realized right then that complaining about lack of respect wasn't going to fix it. We have to change how we operate from the inside out.

No more excuses

The PE Standard was built to push our profession forward, eliminate the friction in your daily teaching, and hold our subject to the high standard it deserves.

What we stand for

respect is earned through structure

standards are non-negotiable

When your gym runs with the precision of a high-performing classroom, administrators, parents, and colleagues take notice.

Yes, class sizes are huge. Yes, time is limited. But with the right routines and frameworks, real learning happens anyway.

PE is a legitimate academic discipline. We unpack state standards, build backward-planned units, and assess progress efficiently.
